Auto un-mute videos on x.com so they play automatically

By default, videos on X (formerly Twitter) autoplay without sound to prevent unexpected audio playback. There isn’t a built-in setting to automatically unmute videos as you scroll through your feed.

Workaround for Desktop Users

For desktop browsers, you can use a userscript to automatically unmute videos:

  1. Install a userscript manager: Add an extension like Tampermonkey to your browser.
  2. Add the userscript: Install the X – Auto unmute videos script from Greasy Fork.

This script attempts to unmute autoplayed videos on X.com automatically. However, its effectiveness may vary depending on browser updates and site changes.Greasy Fork+1Greasy Fork+1

Note on Mobile Devices

Mobile

On the X (formerly Twitter) mobile app, videos in your feed autoplay muted by default. There isn’t a setting to automatically unmute them as you scroll.

Why Videos Autoplay Muted

This behavior is designed to prevent unexpected audio playback, especially in public or quiet environments. It applies to both iOS and Android versions of the app.

Available Options

While you can’t set videos to autoplay with sound, you can adjust autoplay settings:

  1. Open the X app.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Navigate to Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage.
  4. Tap Video autoplay and choose:
    • On cellular or Wi-Fi
    • Wi-Fi only
    • Never

These settings control whether videos autoplay, but they don’t affect the mute status.

Workarounds

There are no reliable workarounds to force videos to autoplay with sound on mobile devices. Some users have reported that videos may retain their sound setting during a session, but this behavior isn’t consistent and can’t be relied upon.

If you require videos to autoplay with sound, using the desktop version of X with a userscript may offer a solution, as previously discussed.
